Tolkien Reading Day – The Love & Friendship Of Gandalf & Bilbo

Well, it’s finally upon us, the 25th March, or as we better know it; Tolkien Reading Day! This time around I’ve decided to read through several passages of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, to read about the love and friendship of Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins.

Tolkien Reading Day 2021 – Hope And Courage – The Tower Of Cirith Ungol In The Land Of Shadow

Here we are, yet another year away from the fall of Sauron and the destruction of the One Ring, on Tolkien Reading Day 2021. The Tolkien society have set the theme of Hope and Courage for us to dig into in some depth, and there is certainly an abundance of both qualities throughout the legendarium, and most especially in the Lord of the Rings.

One of the greatest arcs throughout Tolkien’s entire legendarium is that of Samwise Gamgee. From humble gardener, to Samwise the Brave, Orc-slayer, ringbearer and Mayor of the Shire. Sam is also the character that popped into my mind when I saw the theme for this year’s Tolkien Reading Day, and a particular point in the journey that I have been chipping away at in preparation for an upcoming addition to my collection of Lord of the Rings art.

Ringwraiths at Weathertop – Nazgul – A Knife in the Dark – Lord of the Rings Oil Painting

Ringwraiths, or Nazgul are the horror element to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings story, and the scariest they ever get is quite possibly in Chapter 11 of The Fellowship of the Ring – A Knife in the Dark. With this oil painting, I wanted to capture the fear they induce and put into those who face them.

The Ringwraiths are deadly enemies, but they are only shadows yet of the power and terror they would possess if the Ruling Ring was on their master’s hand again

Frodo and Sam at Parth Galen – The Breaking of the Fellowship – LOTR Oil Painting Illustration Art

The Breaking of the Fellowship… Here we are at the final chapter of the Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two; just over two months since the Fellowship set out from Rivendell on their quest to destroy the ring and things take yet another turn for the worse. Gandalf fell into the abyss whilst fighting the (wingless)ContinueContinue reading “Frodo and Sam at Parth Galen – The Breaking of the Fellowship – LOTR Oil Painting Illustration Art”

The Passage of the Marshes – Oil Painting on Canvas – JRR Tolkien The Lord of the Rings Fantasy Art Illustration

‘The Passage of the Marshes’ inspired by JRR Tolkien’s epic fantasy; The Lord of the Rings. This scene is taken from The Two Towers and tells part of the journey of Frodo and Sam as they head to Mordor to destroy the One Ring.

We pick up the story at the point where Smeagol has been captured by the two hobbits, Frodo and Sam and has been tamed, swearing a promise to ‘”serve the master of the precious.”‘ Although both hobbits are reluctant to trust him, they request that he guides them to Mordor as he knows the area.

They Were Once Men…

“They are the Nazgûl, Ringwraiths, neither living or dead. At all times they feel the presence of the ring…drawn to the power of the one..they will never stop hunting you.” – Aragorn explaining the Nazgûl to Frodo, Pippin, Merry and Sam Some time ago, I began working on a piece depicting the scene of the attackContinueContinue reading “They Were Once Men…”
